Etiquette Training Workshop

Etiquette is an unwritten code of polite behaviours to navigate different social situations. To help our students build confidence, engage with others, and progress professionally, a dining etiquette training workshop was arranged on 13 November 2020 for 29 VTC Globalites who were to take part in the High Table Dinner later the same day. We were delighted to invite Mr Billy TSANG, Restaurant Manager from the Faculty of Management and Hospitality at THEi (CW), to provide our students with a detailed sharing session and practical activities at the International Culinary Institute (ICI).

During the Workshop, Mr TSANG introduced the background of different dietary requirements from various cultures and religions. After examples of basic dining etiquette and common faux pas to avoid, students applied what they have learnt, such as handling tableware and pouring wines during the practical session. They also grasped the opportunity to ask for advice regarding fine dining occasions.

Students’ reflections:

CHEUNG Lok Yee HKDI – Higher Diploma in Fashion Design

"I benefited much from this event. Whether it is interpersonal relationships or table manners, it will become a crisis if not handled properly. At the same time, we must maintain a sincere attitude. I believe the other person will feel it."

WONG Kwun Cheong THEi(TY) – Bachelor of Engineering (Hons) in Civil Engineering

"I learnt about dining etiquette and the proper way to start a conversation during dinner. It is not just about using a knife and fork, but also about how to show your care and respect to others. The spirit of caring can be expressed in every detail of the etiquette routine and this is what we should bear in mind when we engage in conversation."

"In the future, this experience will be a solid foundation to help me present myself. I believe dining etiquette is a critical skill to possess which is not being taught in school."

YUEN Wai Kwan THEi(TY) – Bachelor of Engineering (Hons) in Civil Engineering

"To enjoy and finish an entire high table meal, we ought to use different knives, forks and spoons for the appetizer, main course, and dessert. While having a high table dinner with professionals, it is important to start our conversations by introducing ourselves and we should know some background information about the professionals and also about some social issues to enrich our conversations."
