Seminar “The philosophical aspects of Japanese comics”

Date
Information

The influence of Japanese comics, or manga has swept across the world for many decades and their drawings, artworks, characters, plots, attires, etc., have gained increasing popularity and attracted numerous fans regardless of age and gender. While embracing the “manga craze”, have you ever thought about the hidden message behind?

As one of the highlight of the International Festival 2018/19, it is with great honour to have Vice-Consul Mr Kenji WADA from the Consulate-General of Japan in Hong Kong to deliver a seminar on the topic of Japanese manga from a philosophical perspective. Mr WADA shared the concepts of self-identity, friendship and justice and conducted in-depth analyses in an audience-friendly way, by bringing up those philosophical elements with various earful comics such as “SLAM DUNK”, “ONE PIECE”, “Attack on Titan” and “Naruto”. Meanwhile, he also supplemented with the ideas of renowned philosophers and incorporated with real-life issues, leading our participants a thought-provoking afternoon.
