On 7 May 2021, students, staff and guests gathered at the Hong Kong Institute of Vocational Education (IVE) Kwun Tong to join the Japan Cultural Day festivities in a fun-filled afternoon. The event was one of the signature activities of IVE (Kwun Tong)’s 45th Anniversary and the International Festival of the VTC International Development Office. To celebrate the important milestone of IVE (Kwun Tong)’s development, a rich schedule of Japanese arts and performances were lined up to offer students and staff cross-cultural exposure.
Ms Mamiko TANAKA, Director of Public Relations and Cultural Affairs Division at the Consulate-General of Japan in Hong Kong, graced us with her presence at this joyful occasion as the guest of honour. Delivering the welcome remarks during the opening ceremony, Dr Michael WANG, VTC Deputy Executive Director, extended his sincere gratitude to the Consulate-General of Japan in Hong Kong for the tremendous support in making the event a success. Mr Tomofumi KOIDA, Consul of Public Relations and Cultural Affairs Division at the Consulate-General of Japan in Hong Kong, then returned the sentiment in his opening remarks, which included greetings in Cantonese that won several rounds of applause from the audience and exemplified the kernel of the event - the beauty of cultural exchange.
The captivating free-style Kendama (Japanese traditional folk toy) performance hosted by the Hong Kong Freestyle Kendama Association officially kicked off the event, followed by a Taiko drum performance presented by students from IVE (Kwun Tong) which livened up the stage. Guests were then invited to a tour of cultural booths and campus.
Among the various activities of the day, the Yukata (Japanese summer clothing) training workshop was a key highlight that provided students with first-hand experiences with traditional Japanese clothing. Students received the opportunity to learn from a seasoned Japanese kimono teacher about the history of Yukata, as well as tips and tricks to properly wear the traditional apparel. Two students from IVE (Kwun Tong), YU Chun Sing and DAMAI Neha, Lisa, shared their excitement of acting as the event emcees in Yukata. All participants got to take part in the activities at beautifully decorated booths and experience Japanese culture and arts, including Tsutefude (Japanese contemporary calligraphy), Pastel Nagomi Art (Japanese art healing), Hiragana and Kanji (Japanese language) and Japanese herbarium artwork making.
