Programme Aims

The programme aims to provide the necessary professional knowledge and practical skills for students to become professional practitioners in Electrical Engineering and related fields and to equip them to apply for the related professional certificates and trade licenses, such as the Construction Industry Safety Training Certificate (Green Card). Graduates fulfill the academic requirements for Grade B Electrical Worker by the Electrical and Mechanical Services Department (EMSD) of the HKSAR.  

The programme is designed with an emphasis on generic and language training, whole-person development and workplace experience to better prepare students for further studies and employment after graduation.

Career Prospects

Graduates are very much welcomed by the industry. They are normally employed as assistant engineers, technicians, supervisors, technical sales engineers. Most of them work in the areas of electrical services, electrical installation, power engineering & smart grid, E&M operation and maintenance, electrical & electronic servicing, intelligent systems, energy audit and management, lighting systems.

Articulation

Graduates may articulate to the Degree programmes offered by Technological and Higher Education Institute of Hong Kong (THEi):

  1. Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) in Building Services Engineering
  2. Bachelor of Science (Honours) in Green Engineering and Sustainability

Graduates may apply for admission to the relevant BEng (Hons) programmes offered by the local universities. Upon admission to relevant Degree programmes, graduates may apply for credit exemption. The level of exemption will be considered on individual basis.

Higher Diploma is recognised by most overseas universities. Special offers are given by the RMIT University, Australia (2-year full-time and 8-semester part-time BEng programmes studying in HK in collaboration with the School for Higher and Professional Education (SHAPE) of VTC) [Not applicable to Mainland students].

Professional Recognition

The programme is recognised by :
1. The Hong Kong Institution of Engineers (HKIE) as satisfying the academic requirements for its Associate Membership;
2. The Labour Department of the HKSAR as fulfilling the Mandatory Basic Safety Training (Construction Work) requirements (commonly known as ‘Green Card’);
3. The Electrical and Mechanical Services Department (EMSD) of the HKSAR as fulfilling the academic requirements for Grade B Electrical Worker. (To fulfill the working experience requirements for Grade B Electrical Worker, graduate students should be employed as an electrical worker for at least five years, at least two years of which included practical experience in electrical work.)

 

 

Note

1. Students may be required to attend classes on other VTC campuses. VTC reserves the right to cancel any programme, revise programme title, content or change the offering institute(s) / campus(es) / class venue(s) if circumstances so warrant.
2. The revalidation of the programme will be conducted in 2025. The curriculum will be updated if circumstances so warrant.
